Independent workers who choose the self-employed route as a career are more and more numerous. Some decide to become freelancers as a part-ime job, in addition to the regular employment they have.

There are, however, situations where a company does not like – or permit – an employee to do outside work, because it is considered that such practice would reduce the value of the employee’s services. However, tolerance is also commonly encountered, and some companies even encourage freelance advertising because they use flexible temporary workers themselves when they have to open short-term projects.

There are lots of ways to do some freelance advertising and find clients for your home business.

A first step towards freelance advertising is to ask your friends and relatives to spread the word about your occupation, as this is a great way of finding opportunities on the local market. Nevertheless, word of mouth is not enough: you should also be well represented online so that people can find you more easily. Many freelancers have their own websites and blogs, and you don’t have to work in graphic design to advertise on the Internet.

If your services are good quality but cheaper than those practiced by professional agencies, you have higher chances of being hired by one company or another. Therefore, finding contracts goes hand in hand with freelance advertising.

Freelance advertising may bring customers, but there are other things that make the money flow, including: the time frame, the scope of the project, and the promptness with which you identify or anticipate the client’s needs.

Also consider the time vs. money issues, because you can come to work with all sorts of people, and some would revise the work a dozen times, which negatively impacts the time and money ratio. Therefore, make sure that the number of work revisions is specified in the contract.

There are intermediary web sites on freelance advertising which is a great opportunity for both freelancer and the potential client.

If you find interesting job posts, make sure you check whether there is a maximum amount the client will pay for your services. Knowing how much the other party is willing to pay, minimizes the freelance project search because you’ll bid or get in contact only with those service buyers who would pay you a rate you consider fair.

Many of the maximum accepted rates you’ll find with some clients are justified by their low budget or by the attempt of finding international freelancers that work cheap. Depending on the country, the rates vary greatly.
